Colonel Marc Richard enrolled in the Officer Candidate Training Program in September 1983 and completed his BOTC in December of that same year in Chilliwack, B.C. He then completed phases 2, 3 and 4 of Basic Infantry Officer Training in Gagetown, N.B. and was promoted to second lieutenant in August 1984. He was transferred to 2 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment in August 1984, and then joined 4 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment (Chateauguay) as a reservist in October 1986. From 1986 to 1997, he held a series of positions: Finance Officer, Company 2IC, Officer Commanding a Company in Montreal and in St-Jerome, and Deputy Commanding Officer of the Battalion. In May 1997, he was appointed Commanding Officer of 4 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment (Chateauguay), and he remained in that position until 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Senior Staff Officer of collective training at Land Force Quebec Area Headquarters, and then as Senior Staff Officer of restructuring at 34 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters. He commanded 6 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment from 2003 to 2008. After that, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff Training, then as Deputy Commander of 34 Canadian Brigade Group until his current appointment.
Colonel Richard completed the Mechanized Infantry for Combat Commander Programme at the Militia Command and Staff College in 1993, the Joint Reserve Command and Staff Course in Toronto in 2004, and the Canadian Security Studies Programme in 2009.
In addition to his command, he served during Exercise NOBLE GUERRIER 2004 as Comptroller for the infantry, during KODIAK STRIKE 2005 as Commander and Infantry Leader, during NOBLE GUERRIER 2005 as Commander of the 34 CBG Task Force, during KODIAK STRIKE 2007 as Comptroller and during NOBLE GUERRIER 2008 as Chief Comptroller. He is currently a member of the national council of the Canadian Infantry Association.
He was promoted to the rank of colonel on 5 June 2010 and took command of 34 Canadian Brigade Group on 12 June 2010.
