You can contact CFHA to find out if specific products are accepted:

Canadian Forces Housing Agency
78 Kingston Ave. Shilo MB R0K 2A0

                     Telephone: (204) 765-3000 ext. 4111 Fax: (204) 765-3856

Occupants wishing to use this service must drop off the items during regular working hours. For safety purposes the bin is locked and a log will need to be signed when items are dropped off. We are very excited with this base initiative. The household hazardous waste bin will help the environment by ensuring that hazardous waste is disposed in a safe and proper manner.

There is a red hanging sign outside the Palliser Travel Lounge. Tastefully and comfortably furnished, the travel lounge features private office space with telephone and internet access, complimentary snacks, magazines and newspapers as well as a wide screen television.

This is a year long trial arranged by the Royal Military Institute of Manitoba, the Canadian Forces Liaison Council, the Winnipeg MFRC, 17 Wing, and the Province of Manitoba.

Military Family ID cards

CF Military Family Identification Card programme. The cards are not mandatory but are available to all military spouses (including common law) and children over the age of 12; children under the age of 12 do not receive a family ID card but can have their fingerprints taken at the Identification Section as part of Operation CHILD FIND.

If families are interested in receiving a Family ID Card, the serving member must contact the ID Section at 3383. The serving member of the family must be present for the issuing of the ID card, presenting his/her service number and signing for his family. The ID Section will give priority to the families of deploying members over the next month.

As stated earlier, there is no requirement for families to have a Military Family ID Card. If the Base was to move to a controlled-access state the Military Family ID card would greatly aid families moving off and on of the base. Those Brandon businesses which grant discounts to military members also accept Military Family ID cards.

Safety Tips For Power Failures

It's Manitoba and winter is coming. When preparing yourself for winter survival by pulling out the boots, hats and mittens, why not take a few minutes to ensure you're prepared for what we know winter can dish out. Do you have an emergency plan if power fails? In the event of an extended power outage, it's a good idea to be prepared. Keep essential items in an emergency box and store where it will be easy to find in the dark. Your kits should include:

  • candles and matches
  • flashlight(s) with supply of batteries
  • a portable radio to keep you informed on the status of the power outage
  • food supply that doesn't require cooking
  • manually operated can opener
  • extra blankets
  • a corded phone-cordless phones don't work when the power is out.

If you have a fireplace or woodstove - keep wood supply available.

Alternate Heat Sources

Never use gas ovens, gas ranges, babecues, and most portable or propane heaters for indoor heating.

Think carefully before you bring a fuel-burning appliance into your home. Any device that burns fuels requires oxygen to provide complete combustion and ventilation to remove the products of combustion.

Any device fueled by natural gas, propane, heating oil, Kerosene, coal, charcoal, gasoline or wood produces carbon monoxide.

  • Use only portable space heaters that have been designed for indoor, residential use.
  • Before using a portable heater, review the manufacturer's recommendations for usage and follow the instructions carefully. Only use the fuel for which the appliance was designed.
  • When using the heater, provide adequate ventilation by opening a window slightly.
  • Before refueling turn off the heater, wait for it to cool and take the heater outside to refill.
  • Never use propane or charcoal barbecues indoors. They are designed for outdoor use only. It is preferable to eat a cold meal that die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Keep all heaters at least 1M (3 feet) away from combustible materials including drapes, carpeting and furniture.
  • Turn portable space heaters off when you are not in the room and before you go to bed.
  • Generators should not be brought inside the home for many reasons. Keep generators outside and run a cord into the house. Generators produce carbon monoxide.

Furnace Inspection

CFHA is beginning their annual furnace inspections. If there are any problems entering houses due to soldiers being deployed they will contact the unit.
