Regimental Sergeant Major 2nd Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment

Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Burgess hails from Windsor, Nova Scotia where he graduated from Windsor Regional High School in 1984. Immediately following graduation, he enrolled into the regular component of the Canadian Forces on 31 August 84, attending the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. After completion of Basic Training, he received his QL3 Infantry qualification at the Royal Canadian Regimental Battle School in CFB Petawawa, Ontario. In 1985, CWO Burgess was posted to Juliet Company, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (2RCR) in CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. He was appointed to the rank of Master Corporal in 1986 after completion of the Infantry Section Commander Course (ISCC) and three years later was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he held the position of a Rifle Section Commander and later became the Unit Master Sniper within Reconnaissance Platoon. In 1991 he was deployed to Cyprus on Operation Snow Goose as the Multi-national Security Force, Platoon Commander. Upon his return to Canada, CWO Burgess was posted to 3 Airborne Commando of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, in CFB Petawawa, Ontario. In 1993 he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and held the position of Platoon Second in Command, and later employed as the Pathfinder Platoon Warrant within Combat Service Commando. In 1995 CWO Burgess was posted to the RCR Battle School in Meaford, Ontario as a Course Warrant Officer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) of the Sniper Cell. In 1997 he was posted to the Canadian Forces Language School (CFLS) Ottawa for a one year French Language Course. CWO Burgess returned to Regimental duty in 1998 when he became the Company Quarter Master Sergeant (CQMS) for India Company, 2RCR. In 1999 he deployed with 2nd Battalion to Bosnia- Herzegovina on Operation Palladium ROTO 4. CWO Burgess was promoted to the rank of Master Warrant Officer in 2000 and took on the positions of Company Sergeant Major of a Rifle Company (Hotel), Combat Support Company (Kilo) and Administration Company (Lima). In 2004 he deployed to Haiti on Operation HALO as the National Support Element (NSE) Sergeant Major overseeing the construction and conduct of camp operations. Upon return to CFB Gagetown, he was appointed to the position of Drill Sergeant Major (DSM) for 2RCR. CWO Burgess was promoted to his present rank in 2006, and was selected for employment at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy in Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, as a faculty advisor. CWO Burgess is married to his wife Joy. and has four children Ethan, Eric, Matthew, and Andrew.
